People’s Economy Lab

August 7, 2025

We facilitated eight virtual sessions, each 1.5 hours long, for a cohort of 20 King County residents, including people working in finance and philanthropy, artists and cultural workers, co-op enthusiasts, government and nonprofit employees, advocates for environmental justice, and more.

Sessions took place every other week from August through November 2024. We also held two in-person hangouts with food and drinks so participants could build relationships with each other. Participants received a stipend of $75 per session to support their participation, as needed.

The Economics for Emancipation curriculum is a great starting point for educating community members about economic systems and alternatives to an extractive economy. We made good use of the slides and activities created by the Center for Economic Democracy, picking and choosing what worked well for us and adding our own research and local expertise. The first cohort we facilitated went so well, we’re planning to run another cohort later this year. Even more exciting, the Spanish interpreter we worked with during the first cohort has been inspired to facilitate a two-day Spanish-only E4E deep dive.
